BY BRUCE MARTIN

LAS VEGAS – One of the most famous streets on earth is Las Vegas Boulevard and it is known simply as “The Strip.” With some of the most famous Casinos in the world lining both sides of The Strip it has been the scene of some memorable nights.

On Thursday night the IZOD IndyCar Series gave Las Vegas a night to remember as The Strip was shut down. Instead of passenger car traffic it was 34 IndyCars that hit Las Vegas Boulevard, giving the thousands of spectators that lined the streets a different version of Vegas nightlife.

It was a grand way to welcome the series to Las Vegas in preparation for Sunday’s IZOD IndyCar World Championships Presented by Honda at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“It was fun,” said Team IZOD driver Ryan Briscoe after he drove his red-white-and-blue No. 6 IZOD car down The Strip. “To be amongst the people of Las Vegas it’s great that IndyCar is making so much noise here in Las Vegas. You can’t beat the atmosphere here. It’s pretty spectacular. I had to look after the clutch a little bit and dodge the manhole covers because it’s dark and we don’t have headlights. But it’s the last race of the year and if it is good for the sport and gets all these people that didn’t even know IndyCar was in town to know about the race Sunday it’s all good.”

Paul Tracy has had many nicknames throughout his career from “The Thrill from West Hill” to the “Chrome Horn.” Tracy has a reputation for doing things in style and used to live in Las Vegas before moving to Scottsdale, Arizona. Tracy has seen many crazy things on The Strip and Thursday night he got to take part in something truly memorable.

“It’s pretty cool; it’s great for IndyCar and it’s great for the IZOD series,” Tracy said. “There is always a big crowd on The Strip and a lot of people out here have never seen these cars before. Hopefully it will create a big buzz for the race and bring out more people. It takes a lot of orchestration by the city, the police department and the fire department. This is one of the busiest streets in the world so to shut it out is pretty tough to do.

“Hats off to Randy Bernard (INDYCAR CEO), IZOD and the City of Las Vegas for putting this on.”

The field pulled of 34 IZOD IndyCars along with the Honda Safety Vehicle and the IZOD Two-Seater “Fastest Seat in Sports” pulled up the street and parked in front of the famed Fountains at The Bellagio. Each driver was introduced and posed for photos along with 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti and Lasorda with the “Dancing Fountains” in the background.

Afterwards, the drivers climbed back into their cars and were joined by Mario Andretti and Fiasco in the IZOD Honda Two-Seater. The field took five laps around The Strip as more fans lined both sides of the street and marveled at the incredible scene.

Of course, one of the stars among the fans was Danica Patrick, driver of the No. 7 GoDaddy.com car for Andretti Autosport. She will compete in her final race in the IZOD IndyCar Series on Sunday.

“This has been one of the coolest mainstream stunts that we have ever done,” Patrick said. “Whenever there are these extracurricular things outside of the car I’m a little cautiously optimistic about them. You have this idea it might be a bit of a nightmare and confusing and might not go well but Randy Bernard has done a nice job with this. He has done some stuff to promote this race that has never been done before. I’m sure it will translate to some success and some new fans.

“There was a lot of regular traffic out there but I felt safe somebody stopped traffic for us. It was a little dark but it was pretty smooth and we all did a lot of burnouts for the fans.”

Rookie driver James Hinchcliffe of Newman/Haas Racing thought it was a thrill to race down the streets of his hometown in Toronto earlier this year. A chance to drive his IndyCar on The Strip was something that Hinchcliffe thought was amazing.

“This is awesome,” Hinchcliffe said. “It’s Vegas. It’s The Strip. It’s a pretty cool experience to drive an IndyCar down one of the most famous streets in the world. It’s such the right city with the right atmosphere. It’s a great place for us to end the season. If they could have a street race here it would rival Monaco as the coolest street race in the world. But this says a lot for the sport of the IZOD IndyCar Series and the direction we are going. To get clearance to close down one of the busiest streets in the world shows where this series is right now. We are on an upswing and hopefully we get this town behind it and we are here for many years to come.”

Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport called it a “once in a lifetime” opportunity.

“We’re doing it in style this year,” Hunter-Reay said. “We have to thank Randy Bernard, IndyCar, and IZOD made it all happen. This is something special. I’ve never seen this much activation around a race.”

Graham Rahal was all smiles as he looked at the crowd that turned out to get a chance to see the high-speed cars on The Strip.

“The turnout is darn good – I’m very impressed with the buzz around this event,” Rahal said. “A lot of people lined the streets and are eyeing these cars and that’s pretty good. It’s cool and something I hope we can do more often. It’s great to be here. I’m amazed they made it happen.”

Scott Dixon of Target/Chip Ganassi Racing is usually one of the coolest drivers in the sport but he was excited to be part of such a unique event.

“It’s awesome with all the people down here – it’s fun,” Dixon said. “You can’t do this in any other city. It’s pretty exciting. With the lights and the backdrop with The Bellagio was great. Kudos to Randy Bernard and IZOD for making this happen.”

LAS VEGAS – Ryan Briscoe was back in the suit he loves the best – his red-white-and-blue IZOD uniform – as the Team IZOD driver hit the track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Thursday. Briscoe was the eighth-fastest driver in the practice session for Sunday’s IZOD IndyCar World Championships Presented by Honda and promises more speed out of the No. 6 Team Penske car for Friday’s qualifications.

Briscoe ran a fast lap at 223.482 mph around the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“We had a good practice today,” said Briscoe, who enters the weekend ranked sixth in the series standings. “The IZOD Team Penske car had good speed and we feel good about our chances this weekend. It’s definitely going to be an interesting race.”

Target/Chip Ganassi Racing driver Dario Franchitti enters the final race of the season with an 18-point lead over Team Verizon driver Will Power in the battle for the IZOD IndyCar Series championship. Franchitti was ninth in practice at 223.465 mph and Power was 14th at 222.220 mph for Team Penske.

“We still have some speed to find in the Verizon car but it was a decent start for us today,” Power said. “It’s good to get some laps in here at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and we’ll be working hard to get the most out of the car in practice and qualifying tomorrow.”

Franchitti believes there is a need for more speed from his No. 10 car if he is going to wrap up the championship.

“We have some work to do on the Target car,” Franchitti said. “I wasn’t happy where we were to start today. Lots of work to do to get the car where we need it to be for the race on Sunday.”

Dan Wheldon, who has a chance to win the $5 million GoDaddy IndyCar Challenge if he wins the race from 34th starting position, was 22nd at 221.440 mph.

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves was the fastest of the three Team Penske drivers when he was sixth at 223.519 mph.

“It was a good start today for the Guidepoint Systems car,” Castroneves said. “It’s my first time here at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and we took our time to get to know the track and I think we have a pretty good idea where we need to go for the weekend.”

Danica Patrick may be leaving the IZOD IndyCar Series after Sunday’s IZOD IndyCar Series World Championship Presented by Honda and would love to bid farewell from victory lane. Patrick proved she had a fast car in Thursday’s practice session at the 1.5-mile oval with a fast lap at 224.719 miles an hour referring to it as “Indy speeds.” With 34 cars lapping the Vegas oval some of the speed may have been aided with “tows” but it is undeniable that Patrick would love to end her IndyCar career with a victory before she heads off to NASCAR.

“I think it’s sad that this is the first time I’ve been quickest at any point this year,” Patrick said. “It happened a lot more my first year. I’d just like to finish this right. I’d like to finish it off on a good note and nothing would let me turn the page to the next chapter better than me winning here.”

GO TO MACYS.COM/IZOD TO PURCHASE THE LATEST IN IZOD FALL FASHION.

Patrick scored her career-best NASCAR Nationwide Series finish here when she was fourth on March 5. The speeds are considerably faster than that in the sleeker IndyCars.

“It’s frigging fast out there,” said Patrick, driving the No. 7 Team GoDaddy car. “All the speeds up there are big drafts but that’s pretty quick. The track is nice and smooth and the cars go around here pretty quickly. We are three-wide going around there and it will be pretty exciting. I was reminding myself to turn in nice and gentle and be smooth with the wheel. That means we’re going fast.”

And the fast way around will be hugging the bottom groove of the race track.

Oriol Servia of Newman/Haas Racing was second quick at 224.719 mph. This will be his third race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and his second with Newman/Haas at this track.

“It’s great to be back in Las Vegas,” Servia said. “The last time we ran at this track, the team finished 1-2 so we’re really looking forward to that again. The track felt great and so did the Telemundo car; we finished P2 (second fast) in the session. We all knows it doesn’t mean that much because it’s only the first session but it’s definitely better to be up there than not. The race will be exciting. It will feel like playing Russian Roulette.

“It’s so fast. It’s just so fast and so close to each other, it’s exciting. The fans are going to get a good show. It’s kind of crazy. It’s great that the track is smooth; you can be consistent and try to keep your car in line and follow the car in front when you’re three wide. … Because it’s smooth it allows everybody to be really close, we’re talking three wide, I’m sure at some moments we will be four wide. It’s not just one row, it’s going to be like five rows of three wide and five more rows of three wide. There’s really no room for error. It’s exciting, I’m sure on TV and that the fans here will have a great show.”

Ryan Hunter-Reay was third at 223.888 mph and teammate Mike Conway fifth at 223.558 mph to give Andretti Autosport two drivers in the top five. Target/Chip Ganassi Racing driver Scott Dixon was fourth with a lap at 223.689 miles per hour.

While Franchitti and Power are battling for the championship the other drivers in the field simply want to win the race. And with one win in 115 starts Patrick can’t think of a better way to end her IndyCar career than with a victory in her final race.

“I think that we’ll put on a really close race here this weekend,” she said. “Even in a stock car there is a lot of grip here, so I’m sure that it means that we’re going to be three or four wide, four or five rows deep for a lot of the race here. I think it’s going to be exciting and I think it’s going to be a great way to finish the season off.

Having that little bit of experience here in a stock car, I think will help. It definitely can’t hurt.

“We’re here. Viva Las Vegas, baby.”

Patrick said she has no regrets as she leaves the IZOD IndyCar Series and many memories.

“I’ll always remember my first Indy 500 for sure, winning in Japan, and those will be the things that I remember most,” Patrick said. “But I’ll remember that it has gone fast, but at the same time it seems like light years from 2005 when I started and how far I’ve come as a person and how many things I’ve been able to do, and all the things that I’ve learned along the way. So a lot has happened in that seven years. It’s where I got my start, and it’s what made me who I am today.

“I’ve had a lot of fun. So it’s all part of the process and the journey. In the end, the journey is the fun thing once you’ve accomplished what you want, you just set another goal. I wouldn’t change anything.”

BY BRUCE MARTIN

LAS VEGAS – The final IZOD Macy’s Autograph Session of the 2011 season may have been the best as the largest collection of drivers all season – along with racing legend Mario Andretti – were swarmed by a huge throng of fans at Macy’s Fashion Show Mall on Wednesday night.

Nearly all of the 34 drivers that will race in Sunday’s IZOD IndyCar Series World Championship Presented by Honda – the largest field for an IZOD IndyCar Series race since 35 drivers made the 1997 Indianapolis 500 starting lineup — were in attendance. Andretti rounded out this impressive group of drivers, as the 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner and 1978 Formula One World Champion gave a link from the sport’s glorious past to the great stars that make up the IZOD IndyCar Series today.

“I’ve never seen so many drivers assembled before a race anywhere,” Andretti said. “The drivers when they are asked to participate are here. You can see the value of it all. With IZOD, the marriage they have with Macy’s is fabulous. It’s been great all year. This is what the series needs. We need to be mainstream and this is the way to do it. IZOD is the perfect title sponsor for IndyCar because they see the benefit and the series sees it as well. Macy’s is absolutely awesome. All the major cities – we’re in New York, San Francisco – everywhere. IZOD is so trendy about everything. It’s totally awesome.”

The line of fans eagerly awaiting the autograph session at Macy’s Fashion Show Mall extended well into the lower level of the Macy’s store located at the impressive shopping paradise off the “The Strip” – Las Vegas Boulevard.

“Look at all the people that are here,” exclaimed Damon Benefield, the vice president and general manager of Macy’s Fashion Show Mall. “It far exceeded our expectations. The impact here in Vegas is enormous. You have people locally and impact on the community and people worldwide are here today. It’s an awesome event. I was on vacation and we had three drivers at first and when I got back it was up to 34 people so we were blown away. You can tell the response from everyone in Vegas is an awesome job.

“It’s all about partnership and to have IZOD as our brand within Macy’s together we’re able to bring magic to our customers. We’re really appreciative of the event and the collaboration with IZOD. My daughter is 14-years-old and she likes Danica so to be able to bring her here we couldn’t be happier.”

Patrick was one of the fan favorites of the autograph seekers that got to meet the stars of the IZOD IndyCar Series and it was a chance for her to bid farewell to some of those fans. Patrick is competing in her final race in the series as she heads to a full-time NASCAR effort in 2012.

Patrick admitted the IZOD partnership with Macy’s has been extremely beneficial to the sport and it’s one that she will miss as she moves on.

“Macy’s is great because we are definitely coming to the people and there is a buzz that gets generated from this,” Patrick said. “IZOD and Macy’s have done a great job. It’s really good. It’s a good venue for sure. It helps that Randy Bernard (INDYCAR CEO) has spent a significant amount of time in Las Vegas and has a lot of connections. We are here for a number of days and we have a lot of stuff on our side. The series has gone full-court press on promoting this event. It’s really good to see the video screens on the casinos on The Strip promoting this event and I hope it generates with a big crowd for the race.

“There is always a great turnout and that is a credit to Macy’s and IZOD and the IndyCar Series for promoting the event and having people turn out. I want to thank IZOD and Macy’s for all the great events they have put on for IndyCar. It helps generate fans and excitement for the weekend.”

DANICA PATRICK WITH MACY’S FASHION SHOW MALL EXECUTIVES AND ASSOCIATES.

As Patrick signed autographs, Carla Wenthe, the assistant store manager of Macy’s Fashion Show watched with approval. Wenthe and her staff began promoting this event several months ago and with the size of Wednesday night’s crowd she was able to bear the fruits of her labor.

“What an event this has been and it has put a smile on everybody’s face to get an autograph from their favorite driver. I’m a Danica Patrick fan but I also love Mario Andretti from when I first started watching racing years ago.”

When the IZOD IndyCar Series chose Las Vegas as the site of its championship event the Macy’s staff wanted to get in on the action.

“We’re very excited to see the crowd and being a local store and having the IZOD IndyCar Series championship race is very exciting for us,” Wenthe said. “Knowing the IZOD partnered with Indy we really worked with our special events to bring this to our store. Our store is tourist driven and if you talk to customers in line they are from all over – not just from Vegas. It’s really fun. They’ve brought all of their merchandise with them to sign so it’s very exciting.

In addition to the long line of fans there was also an impressive group of local media that had a chance to interview drivers before the race including the local CBS affiliate and other media outlets.

There is much to report as Team Penske driver Will Power enters the weekend 18 points behind Target/Chip Ganassi Racing driver Dario Franchitti in the battle for the IZOD IndyCar Series championship. While that battle is fierce Wednesday night was a chance for the drivers to meet the fans.

“Macy’s is a fantastic partner with IZOD and it’s great for the series,” Power said. “We look forward to a fantastic future. We’ve done this a few times this year and it’s a great turnout here. We have a lot of drivers here, too. It’s unbelievable. As a competitor it’s fantastic to see all of the other drivers here. They’ve done a great job of promoting this and it’s the best place to come.”

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves of Team Penske always enjoys meeting the fans and having the autograph session at a Macy’s provides a great platform because it’s a more relaxed atmosphere than at a race track.

“For me it’s great because I’m able to chat and be close to the fans,” Castroneves said. “When you are at the race track it’s hard to give them 100 percent attention but you can do that here. For us having Macy’s and IZOD is just fantastic because it shows the connection between racing and clothing and fashion. Racing is fast but it’s also stylish. Just look at the driver’s uniforms.

“This is a perfect way for IZOD to show the connection with the series. When they are here at a shopping mall they see this buzz and it calls the attention to those who don’t know what is going on and hopefully gains more fans to watch the race.

“This is the type of fans we need to have. That means we are in the right place.”

Many of the fans that came to the autograph session will also be at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Sunday’s Showdown which is full of tremendous storylines.

“This is awesome and the promotion has been very, very good,” Castroneves said. “There is a lot going on. It’s the last race of the season, a championship battle, Dan Wheldon can split $5 million with a fan, Danica Patrick leaving – there are so many things you can talk about that makes this race so exciting.”

LAS VEGAS – Dario Franchitti and Will Power have taken their IZOD IndyCar Series Championship battle to Las Vegas where it will be decided in Sunday’s IZOD IndyCar Series World Championship Presented by Honda at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The two combatants arrived in town on Wednesday to kick off a tremendous week of activities that will showcase the IZOD IndyCar Series in one of the great entertainment cities on earth.

This week, IZOD and IndyCar take “Center Stage.”

DARIO FRANCHITTI WAITS DURING DRIVING INTRODUCTIONS AT THE BALTIMORE GRAND PRIX.

“There is a lot of work that has gone into this race; a lot of promotion has gone on which is great to see,” Franchitti said. “I’m hopeful we get a good car here and the Target team can pull through for another championship. With everything going on it’s going to be a much different week that we are used to. The on-track stuff is going to be very, very intense.”

This huge event is the result of the combined efforts of IZOD, INDYCAR, the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority and Honda.

“You have to have the partners involved but you also have to have the drive and organization to pull it together,” Franchitti said. “We are seeing that right now and it will be a big event.”

Franchitti is attempting to win his third-straight IZOD IndyCar Series championship. In fact, it would be his fourth in a row as he drove to the title in 2007 as a member of what was then known as Andretti Green Racing. He did not participate in the series in 2008 as he tried to make the switch to NASCAR but returned as a member of Target/Chip Ganassi Racing in 2009. Since then, Franchitti has won 12 races in 51 attempts and back-to-back IZOD IndyCar Series championships.

No. 4 could be a part of a historic “Three-peat” for Franchitti.

“Let’s see if we do it first,” Franchitti said. “My mind is focused on making it happen. The big difference is look at the laps led. That shows me that if we could have executed better we’d be in better shape. But we are where we are in the position we find ourselves in and will try to close the deal on Sunday.”

Franchitti takes an 18-point lead over Team Penske driver Will Power entering the final race of the season.

“I think Will Power is a very strong contender,” Franchitti said. “In a lot of ways I have an advantage because he seems to think all my success is down to luck. That gives me a huge advantage. I think you have to respect who you are competing against. Whether that is Tony Kanaan or whether it was Scott Dixon in 2007 or Scott and Ryan Briscoe in 2009 or Will last year you have to respect them.

“It won’t be easy but I think we can do it.”

So, let’s spend a few moments “Catching up with Dario Franchitti.”

INSIDE IZOD – What do you like what IZOD has done for the series this year?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “IZOD works hard at promoting the series and that is something all the teams and drivers are happy about.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is the most fun aspect of being involved with IZOD?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “I think IZOD throws a good party so we are looking forward to seeing that. I think Vegas is a great place for that.”

INSIDE IZOD – What’s it going to be like to have IndyCars driving up The Strip on Thursday night?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “The IndyCars up The Strip will be interesting because there will be a certain amount of care taken with these cars. Stay away from the Manhole Covers. But how cool is that we are closing The Strip down. That is introducing IndyCar to a whole new fan base so that is going to be cool.”

INSIDE IZOD – From the schedule it looks like with all the off-track activities the demands on your time will almost be like the Indianapolis 500.

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “It looks very, very busy and I know a lot of work has gone into that schedule both form the team side and the IndyCar side so I hope that all pays off. The important thing is to get a great crowd and a great atmosphere and on track we go out there and try to do our job.”

INSIDE IZOD – In the past you have missed being part of a series that raced at Vegas. When you were in CART it was the original Indy Racing League that ran there. When you switched series in 2003 it was later the Champ Car Series that raced there. How interested are you in racing at that track?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “It’s going to be interesting. I’ve driven both NASCAR divisions there. To me it’s going to be an interesting final race. The layout of the track it will be a big pack race.”

INSIDE IZOD – The IZOD IndyCar Series may not be the longest in racing but with the schedule compact from the end of March to the middle of October, what are the demands like to squeeze all these races in a short period of time?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “It’s a very compact schedule and with the races and some of the testing we do and the sponsor demands then we have the constant training as well. With all of that it’s a very busy season. There really is no off-season. We’re done in Vegas with the championship on a Sunday and then on Wednesday we are testing the new car. It’s a very all-consuming thing that the drivers and everybody on the team does. It’s our life, really and you have to love what you do because it’s so intense. Luckily, we do love it.”

INSIDE IZOD – Because of that how difficult is it to keep your workout schedule when you go back to Tennessee?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “It is tough to do and that is a challenge both when you are traveling and when you are at home with all the different demands. You just have to prioritize.”

INSIDE IZOD – How much does your solitude at your estate in Tennessee help you get your mind back together?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “At the race track things are so busy and so hectic I do like to get away from that for a little bit. When Ashley and I get back here it’s nice and quiet for a while. When it’s time to get that solitude for a while and get relaxed you can see your pals and get back to a normal life.”

INSIDE IZOD – Have you added any more to your pet collection?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “No. It’s still at five cats and two dogs. It’s still a full-time job to feed them. Ashley has been in Europe for a good few months and she just got back this week with one of the dogs and two of the cats so we have a full compliment at the house. It’s busy again.”

INSIDE IZOD – With the time the two of you were apart what was it like `Batching it’ again?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “I was so busy with the schedule I really wasn’t home and when I did have a reasonable amount of free time I was heading over to Europe. During the season I’m very, very busy.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is your stable of cars up to?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “I’m not going to give you an exact number of cars but we have run out of space here for cars. There is definitely more space for the cars in Scotland but I’m not there enough to justify having any more there.”

INSIDE IZOD – What are the prizes of your collection?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “For me every one of the cars I’ve got all does something different for me. Whether it is the Ferrari F40 or the Porsche Carrera GT or jumping into my own 911 hot rod; each car does something different. It doesn’t have to be they go that fast or anything they all bring something to the table. I’m very, very privileged to own some of the cars that I do. That is one of the cool things about getting to drive IndyCars is to fund my car addiction.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is something about Dario Franchitti that would surprise people?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “I have no idea. I really don’t know the answer to that one. I have to think about that one for quite a while.”

INSIDE IZOD – One of your biggest fans is five-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson. I know that he would love to try to drive an IZOD IndyCar. Have you talked to him about that?

DARIO FRANCHITTI — “We’ve talked a lot about that for years. There is no way he is going to get to run on an oval but we joked about it and Chip Ganassi and I have talked about him running on a road course somewhere. I think with Chevrolet coming on as an engine supplier that would be easier for him to do that. I hope so. I would love him to get a shot at driving an IndyCar on a road course. You watch him in the Daytona Prototypes and he is very quick in that but an IndyCar would blow his mind. I really do. Hopefully, he’ll get a chance to do that and if he does I hope to get a chance to see him do it.”

INSIDE IZOD – Favorite foods?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “I would say any day that included Ashley making me an awesome breakfast followed later in the day by pasta made by my mom or my dad. Those are both very good.”

INSIDE IZOD – Best prank ever pulled on you?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “It has to be from back in the days with Bryan Herta, Tony Kanaan and Dan Wheldon at Andretti. It has to be something they did to me. I know they have ruined a good few suits now because every time I’ve been up whether it is getting a prize for winning the Indianapolis 500 or winning a championship prize Kanaan feels it necessary to either throw me in the water or throw a cake at me. That’s an ongoing thing. Hopefully, he gets a chance to do that to me again in Las Vegas. I soon as I cross the finish line I start looking over my shoulder for those guys. We’re very lucky to have Charles Burns as the head of security for the IndyCar Series. Last time I put Charles on lookout so that was helpful.”

INSIDE IZOD – What about your musical preference?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “It’s very wide-ranging but if I had to pick one it would be U2. They are phenomenal.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is the last thing you loaded on your iPod?

DARIO FRANCHITTI – “A British TV show called `Shameless.’”

MEET MARIO ANDRETTI WEDNESDAY AT MACY’S LAS VEGAS FASHION SHOW MALL AT 6PM.

LAS VEGAS – “Drivers, Start Your Sharpies” as IZOD prepares for the one of the largest IZOD IndyCar Series Autograph Sessions of the year that takes place at Macy’s Fashion Show Mall on the Las Vegas Strip, Wednesday, October 12th at 6pm PST.

It’s a fitting way to conclude the highly successful IZOD IndyCar Series Autograph Sessions at Macy’s for the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series season. Drivers such as series points leader Dario Franchitti of Target/Chip Ganassi Racing, his championship challenger Will Power of Team Penske along with three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves, Andretti Autosport drivers Marco Andretti and Danica Patrick and the rest of the drivers that will make up the largest field for an IZOD IndyCar Series race since 35 drivers made the field for the 1997 Indianapolis 500.

These drivers will be in the presence of greatness as 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti will also be featured at the IZOD Macy’s IndyCar Autograph Session. Andretti also won the 1978 Formula One World Championship and the 1967 Daytona 500 – the only driver to win all three prestigious titles.

IZOD IndyCar Series fans and Macy’s customers are invited to the event that begins with media availability at 5:30 p.m. local time followed by the autograph session from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the first floor interior mall entrance to Macy’s just off Las Vegas Boulevard.

For those fans that purchase any IZOD merchandise, they will receive a free IZOD IndyCar Series cap. Plus, customers who make a purchase of $50 or more will receive a pair of tickets to the IZOD INDYCAR World Championships Presented by Honda Sunday, October 16th.

“The IZOD IndyCar Series autograph sessions are great for the fans - they have a DJ and the music really creates the feeling of a big event,” Power said. “Coming to the IZOD event at Macy’s is definitely huge.”

Other drivers love to have a chance to get to meet the race fans in person.

“It’s great to be able to come out and meet the fans in an environment that is completely different from the race track,” Castroneves said. “I can see the fans really enjoy it too. The energy of the IZOD autograph session is awesome. It’s been great and I’m sure next year and the years to come these will be even better. It’s cool to meeting the racing fans because in my situation because of `Dancing with the Stars’ it’s so cool to hear people say they voted for me and bring me pictures not wearing a racing suit but a tuxedo, I really care about that. They put on a dancing competition with the fans and you always discover some talent.

One of those drivers that will be signing autographs is two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon, who has a chance to split $5 million with a fan if he wins from the last starting position in Sunday’s IZOD IndyCar Series World Championship Presented by Honda as part of the GoDaddy.com IndyCar Series Challenge.

His week will get revved up at the IZOD Macy’s IndyCar Series Autograph Session on Wednesday night.

“In previous years we have done a lot of autograph sessions at the track and since IZOD has brought us to Macy’s and the way it is put together and the atmosphere it creates it is fun, high energy and glamorous,” Wheldon said. “It is more attractive to the fans and for us it’s more enjoyable to do it because of the environment, it has been cool.

One of the biggest lines is for Patrick, who will be starting her final race in the IZOD IndyCar Series at Las Vegas.

“The kids are the best,” she said. “They make it all worth it. I love the kids.”

Don’t be surprised to see several of the drivers shopping for their favorite IZOD apparel at Macy’s after the autograph session.

“First of all I don’t have enough of it,” said Alex Tagliani, who lives in Las Vegas with his wife, Bronte. “I travel with IZOD T-shirts all the time. They are very comfortable. I like them. They are a very good fit. The slim-fit is my style. Some of the polo shirts I have with the sponsor are lightweight fabric. You can put them in your dryer and they don’t shrink so it is very convenient for us when we are on the road. They don’t have any wrinkles, either, when you get them out of your luggage. I want more. Whatever I can do to get some more of those clothes because no matter if I’m at the track or going out with Bronte on a casual movie run or dinner sometimes I have IZOD stuff on me. They are really good pieces.”

IZOD features some great looking apparel that brings together the fast-paced sport and some of its historic looks.

“I think it is really cool especially with the old IndyCar designs and the lines they have; the vintage era of IndyCar they have been able to capture some of that history and the glory days of the Indianapolis 500,” said Ed Carpenter, who scored his first career victory at Kentucky on October 2. “It’s very cool to see all that stuff that they have at Macy’s when you go in there.”

Ryan Hunter-Reay is another driver who loves the chance to meet the fans and promote the IZOD brand.

“I think it’s fresh; it’s young and really showcases the American side of it,” Hunter-Reay said. “You can see it through their image and branding they appeal to that fresh, young American group. Sports oriented, and that’s a great fit with IndyCar – cutting edge with the Perform-X line.”

IZOD Autograph Session Wednesday at Macy's Fashion Show Mall in Las Vegas

IZOD Zooms Into Las Vegas for Biggest IZOD IndyCar Series Autograph Session of the Season

Catching Up With Vitor Meira

BY BRUCE MARTIN

Go to Macys.com/IZOD to buy the latest in IZOD Fall Fashion.

MOORESVILLE, North Carolina – With one off weekend left before the IZOD IndyCar Series World Championship Presented by Honda in Las Vegas on October 16 Vitor Meira gets a trip to Hawaii. But don’t expect to see the likeable driver from Brazil who drives the No. 14 ICOD IndyCar for team owner A.J. Foyt lounging on the beach with a Mai Tai in his hand.

Meira and fellow IZOD driver Tony Kanaan will be competing in the Ford Ironman World Championship – the famed Triathlon – in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii on Saturday, October 8. It’s a grueling test of physical endurance that includes a 2.4-mile swim in the Pacific Ocean, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run.

So much for a “weekend off” but Meira is a veteran Ironman competitor and looks forward to the challenge.

“I ran the Half-Ironman Championship last year but now it’s the full Ironman,” Meira said. “Man, it’s much bigger than I thought it would be. As I started training and putting the miles necessary to do a decent job there it’s pretty hard. It’s a lot of mind training to be honest because you are on the bike for like five hours training and then you run for 2-1/2 hours. You have to train mentally for it because it is such a big challenge. I try to spend as much time as I can not to disturb the IndyCar training and put as much time as I can not to disturb racing at all.”

Of the three events Meira likes the bicycle portion the most and swimming the least.

“It doesn’t mean I’m bad at it,” he admitted. “I’m OK on the bike and I’m OK on the swim. I have to improve the running but my least favorite is the swimming because it’s not social whatsoever. You get in the water and you just swim. When you are on the bike you can be social and go out with friends and run with friends and go places. But swim – you just swim. Nothing else but swim.”

Meira’s preparation is intense and is ready for that to pay off this weekend.

“In a week where I don’t have anything else like racing I will go a good 14 hours a week preparing for this,” Meira said. “That’s at the very least. That is running every other day and biking every other day. One day you bike; one day you run. One day you bike; one day you run. In between them you have to swim so that is how my training goes.”

So, let’s spend a few moments “Catching up with Vitor Meira.”

INSIDE IZOD – What do you like about IZOD fashion?

VITOR MEIRA – “I think IZOD fashion is more free rather than being classic. It is young and sporty styles. That is what I like most about it. I always liked IZOD’s clothes. I didn’t really know it was such a big company but I always like it before any relations with IndyCar I always had clothing from IZOD.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is the most fun aspect of being involved with IZOD?

VITOR MEIRA – “The most fun about IZOD is the correlation and the commitment they have with the series. Not only are the clothes good it wouldn’t be as much fun if it were another brand. The IZOD people are fun and it’s a good, young, sporty brand that is also heavily involved in trying to participate as much as they do with the series. That’s the most fun part – working with them. It’s not the commercials or the clothes it’s the whole experience working with them and the commitment to whatever they are promoting and working as a partner. They are more than a sponsor – they are a partner and that is the most fun.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is it like working with an American legend like A.J. Foyt as the team owner?

VITOR MEIRA – “Everybody is different and it’s a lot of understanding the perspective of everybody. A.J. can get a little upset and sometimes harsh on you. If you understand that it’s only because he wants to win races and improve the team from day to day, race to race, and year to year. If you understand that and let alone the personal part of it. It’s not that he is mad because of you; it’s because he has a bigger picture in mind and thinking about the team it becomes understandable and easy to work with him. He only gets mad and does the things he does because he wants to get better. Putting myself in his position I would do the same. Maybe I would express myself differently but the objective is always the same. If you understand that you can work with him.”

INSIDE IZOD – He has some characters that work on the team. What is that like?

VITOR MEIRA – “We are all in Waller, Texas which sets the team apart from those based in Indianapolis. Everybody in Indianapolis has the same type of work ethic. A.J. Foyt being far from Indianapolis we have different guys with different perspectives and there is not mixed up there. He does have a lot of interesting characters because being out of Indianapolis and the circle of racing is the difference. I think it comes more from that – just from being out of the Indianapolis area. Not that there is anything wrong with being in Indianapolis but sometimes it makes a difference to be away from that.”

INSIDE IZOD – A.J. Foyt is a pretty big eater and you are a Health Nut. What is that like?

VITOR MEIRA – “It is definitely something that I had to prepare myself to because all they have at the track is Hot Dogs and sometimes Pizza or Flat Meat (Cold Cuts). That is all they have in the truck. It’s a matter of preparation. I go out and buy my own stuff and buy my own bread and all that. When there is no choice you have to eat so you eat whatever A.J. eats if you don’t prepare. If you do prepare you go out; get some groceries and do your own thing.”

INSIDE IZOD – How often are you in Texas?

VITOR MEIRA – “Preseason I’m always there but during the season when the travel really thickens there is not a lot of time to go to Texas. I don’t go much during the thick part of the season but in the preseason at right after the season I go quite often. In the year I’ll go between five to 10 times.”

INSIDE IZOD – You are from Brasilia. Compare Brazil to Texas because a lot of people don’t realize how big Brazil is as a country and Texas is a huge state.

VITOR MEIRA – “I would compare Brasilia to Phoenix. It is a young city that was planned and right in the center. It’s hot but dry. It’s not humid like Miami.”

INSIDE IZOD – Where did you first live when you came to the United States?

VITOR MEIRA – “The first place I lived was Indianapolis for a year and then Dublin, Ohio when I drove for Bobby Rahal.”

INSIDE IZOD – Was that a culture shock?

VITOR MEIRA – “It was but before moving there I was living in Italy and before Italy I was living in England. It was a bit of a culture shock but I liked it much more than living in Italy so to me it was a step up.”

INSIDE IZOD – Do you consider yourself a car guy?

VITOR MEIRA – “I am a car guy. I definitely don’t go and spend a lot of money on it to be honest, though. I wanted to have a good car and now I have that. But nothing is going to beat IndyCar. I’ll stay with what I have here and I’ll let the IndyCar be my fast car. I’m not a car nut like Tony Kanaan or Graham Rahal or Tomas Scheckter. I really like cars but I like the racing cars.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is something about Vitor Meira that would surprise people?

VITOR MEIRA – “Something I try to cultivate is like a lot of guys I don’t try to be a Super Hero. I’m just a normal guy with a cool job. I don’t think I’m a Super Hero like a lot of people think. I’m a guy that had a talent; searched for the dream and it’s happening. I’m thankful for that.”

INSIDE IZOD – Favorite foods?

VITOR MEIRA – “Sushi and Pasta for sure. There is a great Sushi place on Meridian Street in Indianapolis up around 86th Street called Ocean World. For Pasta there are a few places in Indianapolis I like such as Bravo!

INSIDE IZOD – Best prank you’ve ever pulled?

VITOR MEIRA – “I’m a terrible prankster. I cannot pull pranks. I haven’t had one that I’ve been able to pull off. I did have one pulled on me by Jaques Lazier. He put tie-wraps on the axle of the car that I rented so when it made a weird noise everywhere and were hitting the bottom of the car. That is the last one I remember and that was in 2003.”

INSIDE IZOD – What about your musical preference?

VITOR MEIRA – “I like a little bit of everything but I am more Rock and Roll and than anything else. I like Pearl Jam and R.E.M. a lot.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is the last thing you loaded on your iPod?

VITOR MEIRA – “The last thing I loaded was a Top Gear show which is a British car show. As far as music it was Pearl Jam – Australia. A concert they performed in Australia.”

SPARTA, Kentucky – Ed Carpenter finally discovered the “Look of a Winner” while a dramatic change to the IZOD IndyCar Series points race may have given Dario Franchitti the “Look of a Champion.”

On a day when Carpenter and team owner Sarah Fisher celebrated their first IZOD IndyCar Series win the series championship took a huge turn in Sunday’s Kentucky Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway.

Team Penske’s Will Power started on the pole and had built a 2.7924-second lead over his closest pursuer, Graham Rahal, by lap 45. But when Power came into the pits for his first stop on Lap 49, Ana Beatriz of Dreyer & Reinbold Racing was sent out of her pit stall and her car ran into Powers’ sidepod. It left a huge gash in the side of the car and Powers’ chance at victory – and the championship – took a wicked turn.

He entered the race with a 12-point lead over Target/Chip Ganassi Racing’s Dario Franchitti but his 19th place finish combined with Franchitti finished second to Carpenter has put Power 18 points behind Franchitti with the season’s final race at Las Vegas remaining.

“The hole in the car was worth 4 miles per hour; the handling didn’t really change but it felt like I had a gear less,” Power said after the race. “I did not see Ana leaving her pits. They sent her straight into us. It was just a mistake from what they told me. She had bobbled around trying to get first gear and by that time I was there. If she had gone when she was supposed to she would have been in front of us.”

Earlier this year at Iowa Speedway Power was in a similar pit road incident when he was sent out of the pits into the path of another car and the contact ended his chance at contending for a victory. On Sunday, he was on the receiving end of a pit road mistake.

“You can say it is the pits,” Power said. “It is mind-boggling the things that have happened to me in the pits. It’s the exact same thing as what happened at Iowa. It’s unbelievable. We had the quickest car today. I couldn’t see anyone beating us the car was so fast. It is the fastest oval car I’ve ever had; no question. You could see in qualifying and in the race. Who pulls away on a mile-and-a-half? People don’t do that.

“It was going to be an easy day. I just can’t believe it. Now, we have to put 100 percent into the last race. It can go back my way at Las Vegas; we just need to focus on winning the race, getting the pole and leading the most laps. It’s not going to help us thinking about it; we just have to work that much harder. I couldn’t care less what Dario does. I know what my agenda is – I have to win.”

But the real stars of Sunday’s race were Carpenter and Fisher, two series favorites who had never been to victory lane in an IZOD IndyCar Series race. Carpenter had come close at Kentucky Speedway finishing second in both 2009 and 2010. He lost the 2009 race in less than a blink of an eye but didn’t flinch on Sunday as Carpenter knew what it took to finally get into victory lane.

His path to victory was the outside line as he was locked in a fierce side-by-side battle with Franchitti. After Beatriz’s crash and the lengthy caution that followed, the green flag waved with Franchitti starting alongside Carpenter with 22 laps to go in the contest.

The two would stay locked in that formation for the remainder of the race but Franchitti was out of his “Push to Pass” overtake assist allotment on his Honda engine. Carpenter had one “Push to Pass” left and was able to use it at the right time coming out of Turn 4. That allowed the nose of Carpenter’s car finishing just .0098-seconds ahead of Franchitti for the sixth-closest finish in IZOD IndyCar Series history.

“I was going to try my best,” Carpenter said. “Early on in the race, I wasn’t sure it was the day. A lot of things happened during the day where I wasn’t sure it was going to be the day. But the guys made great changes on the car all day long. Yesterday I felt like we had a winning car. The first half of today it didn’t feel like it. We kept working at it, did everything we needed to do. The guys kept fighting, even after my visor was falling off.

“It was meant to be today. Winning just feels good for myself, my team, my family. I don’t care what everybody else thinks at this point. It took me 113 tries. I’ve been working at it a long time, I’m just going to enjoy it.”

Carpenter started fourth in Fisher’s No. 67 Dollar General car and led three times for eight laps including the final distance to the checkered flag.

“I still don’t believe it yet,” said Fisher, who gave birth to her daughter Zoe on September 13. “I hadn’t been to the shop in three or four weeks. My daughter was born three weeks ago on Tuesday. The boys have just done a tremendous job. Andy, my husband, who is our team manager, has really stepped up to the plate to run the team and to do it all on his own while I was off messing around with family stuff. The boys just worked incredibly hard. The big ovals were 100 percent of our focus this year. We started off at Indy and did really well there, leading laps, and continued that here.

“Gosh, I still can’t believe it. It’s just unreal. I’ve already had somebody ask me, What do you think, being a driver, having a finish, or being an owner, having a win, is it just as special? It absolutely is. I cannot be happier and more proud of the group that we’ve assembled to accomplish this today.”

It was Franchitti who had the most to gain and Power the most to lose in Sunday’s race. Franchitti started 11th and appeared to be in danger of losing more points to Power early in the race as he was mired back in traffic while the Team Penske driver was dominating. But that all changed after the pit stop collision between Power and Beatriz.

Franchitti’s second-place finish may have been as good as a win as the driver for Target/Chip Ganassi Racing attempts to win his fourth career IZOD IndyCar Series championship and his third straight in the October 16 season finale at Las Vegas.

“It’s certainly nicer than the position we were in at Motegi, no doubt about it but it can change in a second,” Franchitti said. “At the end, literally from the green flag of that last restart, Ed was starting to come alongside. I was just trying to work with the controls in the car. It’s the smallest things that make the differences in these tracks, the smallest amount of difference in the way you drive a corner. I was just trying to figure out the fastest way around with the conditions the way they were. Ed was alongside. I got the okay to use the overtakes. We were okay on fuel. They told me I had one overtake for every lap. I don’t know if they miscounted or I used one twice in each lap. I needed to use them to keep Ed alongside.

“Had I not used them, I think he would have cleared me and it would have been over anyway. I didn’t have any overtakes left. It was close. But, again, I thought Ed drove a great race. It was clean; nothing crazy. We just came up a little bit short.”

Teammate Scott Dixon finished third for this fifth top-five finish in the last five races. Dixon clinched the A.J. Foyt Oval Trophy by 10 points over Franchitti, who won that award last year.

“It’s a big honor to obviously win the A.J. Foyt oval award,” Dixon said. “The guy’s a legend, a character as I’m sure everybody knows. Today was a bit of a different story. We just seemed to struggle a lot with speed, especially getting up to speed. The car for the first three or four laps after a restart just kind of sat there and did nothing. It was kind of frustrating. I’m not sure if we missed on the restart gears or something there. Just seemed to get hosed by everybody, took three or four laps to get back to where we kind of were.

“All in all a great day for the team, a big points swing in the championship. I’m out of it now which is sad for us. Obviously we’ll try and help and push Dario as much as possible at Vegas.”

Team IZOD driver Ryan Briscoe started 18th and finished eighth as the highest finishing driver for Team Penske.

“We just didn’t quite have the speed this weekend,” Briscoe said. “I was pretty happy to move forward form 18th. I had a pretty good race car and once I landed in the top six or top eight I didn’t have as much speed as the guys I was around and was flat out hanging on. We need to go to work a little bit. The race itself was promising. I’m really happy for Ed Carpenter. He has been in the battle the last two years. I beat him to the line in 2009 and fuel strategy cost him last year when Helio Castroneves won. He is the most deserving winner at Kentucky today and it’s great to see him in victory circle.

“I’m back in the IZOD car at Las Vegas. It’s the best looking car and suit out there. I’ll be very proud to wear the colors and will be gunning for a win. It would be huge to get a victory for IZOD at Las Vegas.”

Team Penske driver and defending winner Helio Castroneves finished last in the 29-car field when he had a rare engine failure after 34 laps.

“We did not expect this problem; we changed engines so we could go a little bit faster,” Castroneves said. “We were doing much better. I thought the car was really good and we were catching the lead pack. Honda has done a fantastic job but we dropped water into the cylinder and ended up losing a cylinder. That’s very unique but it happened. You have to take what you get. In these circumstances I was for changing engines. It’s just a shame it didn’t work out today because the car was very good.

“The way this season has gone I want to end it and start next season over for the entire group. It’s not what we wanted but racing is like that – sometimes you have good days and sometimes bad days.”

Rookie James Hinchcliffe started third and finished fourth for Newman/Haas Racing and Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay rounded out the top five.

There was only one crash but three yellow flags for 32 laps. Two of the cautions were for debris.

Rookie driver J.R. Hildebrand of Panther Racing was involved in a pit road crash on Lap 140 that left Panther crewman Eric Scheumann with a lower leg injury when he was struck by the front wing of the No. 4 car. Scheumann was treated in the infield care center and later transported via helicopter to University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky for further evaluation.

IZOD-Kentucky Qualifying Report

Team Penske Driver Will Power Blows Way the Field to win the IZOD IndyCar Series Pole at Kentucky

SPARTA, Kentucky – In a tight race for the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series title where every point counts, Team Penske’s Will Power added one more point to his season total in dominating fashion. He blew away the field to win the pole Saturday for Sunday’s Kentucky Indy 300 with a series record-tying eighth PEAK Performance Pole Award this season while setting a two-lap qualifying record at the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway.

The all-time IndyCar record for poles in one season is held nine held by Mario Andretti and Danny Sullivan.

Power won the pole with a two-lap average of 219.283 miles per hour in his No. 12 Verizon Team Penske IZOD IndyCar. That broke Ed Carpenter’s previous record of 217.933 mph set last season.

Power was beaming with happiness as he walked up pit lane after his record run.

“I remember last year when we turned up at Homestead and Ganassi just blew us away so we have had a lot of focus on getting the best car combination we could,” Power said. “That’s just qualifying so we have to have a good race car on Sunday. Getting that extra point puts us in a good position to lead the most laps. But we are going to do everything we can and not think about the points.”

Power now has a 12-point lead over his championship rival, Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Dario Franchitti, who had a disappointing qualification effort that lines him up 11th on Sunday. His two lap average was 217.213 mph.

“Anything can happen in this game so we have to keep our head down race by race, lap-by-lap, corner by corner,” Power said. “I don’t care where it is just to win the championship would be great. Everything I’ve worked for my whole life would be to win a championship like this. I’m just trying to keep my head in the game.”

Power’s teammates didn’t fare as well in qualifications as three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves was 16th with a two-lap average of 216.732 mph in the Cintas Team Penske No. 3. He is the defending winner of this race.

“At least our teammate is up there,” Castroneves said of Power. “We need that guy up there to have the championship for him. Right now we have a great race car – not as fast as we want it but the race setup is very good. With a great strategy we can win just like we did last year. There is no question about it we want to defend this race win. We will do everything we can to put ourselves in that position. We have a solid car and we feel we will be good in the race. It’s all about being in the right place at the right time and adjusting the car as we go along. Our cars are very good; very solid. Now, we just have to finish.

“But compared to the speed of my teammate I feel like we have an anchor in my car. Details make a big difference here. I’ve been in this situation before but right now this place is very tricky and it’s going to be a battle out there.”

Team IZOD driver Ryan Briscoe qualified 18th with a two-lap average of 216.669 mph in the Transitions Adaptive Lenses No. 16 entry.

“It’s not for lack of effort,” Briscoe said. “I’ve gotten plenty of pole positions on these ovals before. It feels like we have a dog engine for some reason. I don’t know what to do. It’s not really going to be up to me what we do. We’ll analyze the data and see where I’m 3 miles per hour slower than the 12 car (Power). That’s not much,” he said with a laugh. “I’m just really confused and perplexed at the moment.”

For the second race in a row there have been some chief mechanic changes with Team Penske. Sean Hanrahan, who has served as chief mechanic of the Castroneves’ car for the past two seasons, was injured in a motorcycle accident last weekend and will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. Matt Jonsson will return to his role as chief of the No. 6 car beginning this weekend while longtime Team Penske mechanic Rick Rinaman returns as chief mechanic of the No. 3 car team.

In Japan, Rinaman took over as chief of the No. 6 car while Jonsson focused on the development of the 2012 program with Chevrolet.

Graham Rahal starts on the outside of the front row for the second time this season. He also started second at Baltimore last month.

“We had a fast car all day, but the Service Central crew actually didn’t even tell me this before we ran, but we found out they looked over the setup sheet and one of the tows was wrong for the whole day,” Ganassi said. “We made that change and it was like the car just came to life. It’s been really good and it’s been fast all day, but the car in qualifying felt almost perfect. I thought Will was going to be tough to beat but I didn’t see that kind of speed coming. But it feels good to start on the front row. For us we’ve been knocking on the door particularly the last few races.

“We’ve been there; we’ve been qualifying right up front. Hopefully tomorrow we can break through and finish up front.”

Rahal has at times been at odds with fellow Ganassi drivers Scott Dixon and Franchitti this season but is firmly on board with the team in helping Franchitti win his third-straight IZOD IndyCar Series title this season.

“I think that the teamwork of us all has gotten stronger as the year has gone on, quite frankly particularly here,” Rahal said. “When we showed up for the test, I don’t think any of us were happy at all with the cars. We made the cars a lot better. Most of us run a very similar setup. I think all four of us in the race, our cars are extremely good. You’ll be able to pass here. We saw in practice today.

“A lot of people asked me if we’ll be single file. Guys in practice were everywhere today. As far as any rivalry, truthfully right now the goal right now is to help these guys win a championship. We’re not in the hunt. Certainly for us we can either finish sixth in the championship or 14th, obviously we’d like to be sixth, but certainly to help the team win a championship.”

As for Franchitti, he realizes starting 11th has made his mission of getting back to the front of the standings more difficult but he remains locked in a tight battle just 12 points back. Franchitti’s qualification efforts were hampered when the team had to change an engine on Saturday.

“I don’t know if they had problems with telemetry but we let it get too hot this morning but it was a bit of a rush for the guys,” Franchitti explained. “The balance of the car was good in second practice and also very good in qualifying. I just got on the back straight and the thing didn’t accelerate. I’m not sure what that was all about. I got on the front straight, it didn’t accelerate either. I’m pretty upset with the qualifying. That’s not what we need to be doing.

“The good thing is being part of the Target team, we know we can rebound and we know we’ve got all the stuff to come back tomorrow. I think we have a good racecar. It’s good in traffic. After a number of laps, it’s very consistent. It seemed fairly quick earlier. Hopefully that will be the case tomorrow.”

Target/Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Dixon qualified seventh with a two-lap average of 217.692 mph. He is third in points, 59 out of first, but enters the race as the leader in the A.J. Foyt Trophy standings as the top oval track driver this season. He has a 17-point lead over Franchitti.

“We tried to find speed,” Dixon said. “I think that’s been the most difficult part, is obviously the test here the car balance-wise and feel of it feels pretty good, but straight-out speed by itself is maybe not the best. It’s the same with these guys, in race traffic, even when we fill the thing up; it seems to go the same speed. This morning in traffic and towing up, we put up some good numbers. It feels good in that scenario.

“Where we qualified is not where we want to be, but we’ll do our best to have a comeback and try to get back to the front of the field in the first stint for sure. Need to try to get around Will so he doesn’t get the most laps led.”

Rookie driver James Hinchcliffe qualified third for Newman/Haas Racing with a two-lap average of 218.186 mph. Kentucky ace Ed Carpenter was fourth for Sarah Fisher Racing with a two-lap average of 218.004 mph. Rookie driver J.R. Hildebrand rounded out the top five at 217.872 for Panther Racing.

The 29-car field gets the green flag Sunday at 2:45 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time with the VERSUS telecast beginning at 2 p.m. Eastern.

BY BRUCE MARTIN

MOORESVILLE, North Carolina – There is something about the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway that fits Ed Carpenter’s driving style perfectly. In 112 career IZOD IndyCar Series starts Carpenter has two podium finishes. Both of those came at Kentucky Speedway.

In seven starts at the bumpy track located near the Ohio River Carpenter has five top 10 finishes and has finished twice the last two seasons. He started 14th for Vision Racing in 2009 and led 34 laps before finishing just .01162 seconds behind Team Penske’s Ryan Briscoe in the 11th closest finish in IZOD IndyCar Series history.

Last year for Panther Racing Carpenter started on the pole and led 11 laps before finishing second to race winner Helio Castroneves, who blew away the field to win by a whopping 13.160 seconds.

As a rookie driver for Red Bull Cheever Racing in 2004 Carpenter finished eighth. He was seventh in 2007 and sixth in 2008 so his success the past two seasons is certainly no fluke.

“It’s hard to put a finger on it; I’ve been fortunate to have fast cars there the past few years and that’s been a big part of it,” said Carpenter, who returns to Kentucky Speedway for Sarah Fisher Racing this weekend in Sunday’s Kentucky 300. “A lot of people don’t like it because of the bumpiness. It is the bumpiest 1-1/2-mile track we go to and that probably bothers some people. My favorite USAC Sprint Car track was Salem, Indiana and that is pretty bumpy, too. I don’t know if there is something there about bumpy race tracks that I like. I’ve been able to have good cars at Kentucky and the test went well last week so hopefully that will be a good indicator of this weekend.”

Carpenter grew up in Marshall, Illinois and is a proud resident of Indianapolis. Traveling just a few hours south to Sparta, Kentucky has a certain “Hometown Feel” to Carpenter.

“It is definitely nice; there are a lot of people from Indianapolis that come down to the race,” Carpenter said. “I don’t feel that I drive any different with people there that I know but it definitely makes it fun to know some people are behind you. At the end of the day when you put the helmet on and you are on and are out on track you aren’t thinking about that; you are trying to get the job done. It is fun, though, no doubt.”

This season Carpenter has taken over the cockpit from Sarah Fisher, who is concentrating on her role as team owner and became a mother for the first time as she and her husband Andy O’Gara had their first child, Zoe, on September 13.

Carpenter is hoping to give Fisher an early gift with a victory at Kentucky.

“Absolutely, I think we can,” Carpenter said. “We had a good test there and I feel good going there and they did a great job getting ready for this season. The budget that we had the ovals is where we need to shine at.

“I think me being at Panther last year we were able to test before the race and get the car somewhere to what it was at Vision. It was faster than the cars I’ve had in the past. I feel like we are in good position to keep that momentum going at Kentucky this year but I think we have shown that at some of the other speedways. We haven’t had the finishes that we were looking for but we have had the speed.”

So, let’s spend a few moments “Catching up with Ed Carpenter.”

INSIDE IZOD – What do you like about IZOD fashion?

ED CARPENTER – “I think it is really cool especially with the old IndyCar designs and the lines they have; the vintage era of IndyCar they have been able to capture some of that history and the glory days of the Indianapolis 500. It’s very cool to see all that stuff that they have at Macy’s when you go in there.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is the most fun aspect of being involved with IZOD?

ED CARPENTER – “Ever since IZOD got involved with IndyCar as the official apparel company and then the series sponsor they brought a ton of energy to the sport. It has helped us get more mainstream and continues to get more mainstream. It’s fun to have partners involved in the sport that see the strength of IndyCar that are helping us get IndyCar back to where it belongs.”

INSIDE IZOD – What are some of the things you like to do away from the track?

ED CARPENTER – “Away from the track for me is all about family. The best thing about being a race car driver is not having to work a day job. Having two young kids it allows me to have a lot of time with the family that people that have day jobs don’t have the luxury we are able to do. I have kids that are 3 and 2 so they keep me more than busy off the track.”

INSIDE IZOD – What are some of those things that you do with the family?

ED CARPENTER – “They travel to most of the places with me. When we are on the road when we can we try to do something along the way. When we went to Iowa we went to the John Deere Museum which was pretty cool. We take them to different cities and when we are home it allows me to do more with the kids like go to the park all the time and go to soccer with them. We have the luxury to do whatever we want to do during the week.”

INSIDE IZOD – Has the driver motorhome lot become a lot more of a family play place lately?

ED CARPENTER – “A lot of it is we’ve had the same drivers in the sport now that are not in their early to mid 20s anymore. Guys are starting families. It’s cool to see and I think it’s good for the sport that guys have been around long enough to start families, continue their careers and be a part of our sport.”

INSIDE IZOD – How important has it been for you to have your stepfather Tony George and your mother Laura at all the races?

ED CARPENTER – “It’s always nice to have your family around. I’ve been blessed to work with them as team owners as long as I did. Now I’m driving for someone else and still having their support is great to have them around all the time.”

INSIDE IZOD – How about your team owner joining the family crowd with the birth of Zoe on September 13?

ED CARPENTER – “They have such a huge family they are blessed that a lot of family is around close by that can help. I think they are ready for the challenge. That has always been fun for me because I don’t care how many family members you are to be on a team that values family and it makes it a lot easier to have family around and work with them on the team.”

INSIDE IZOD – Are you still redoing houses?

ED CARPENTER – “No, that has had to die off for a while. Between keeping up with racing and spending time with the kids there is not enough time to do that. That was a bit of a hobby that took up a time commitment.”

INSIDE IZOD – What about that do you miss?

ED CARPENTER – “I like being hands on. Coming up I worked on cars and I liked to build things and work on projects. What I liked more than anything was the hands on building things. Now, it’s putting the kids’ toys together basically. We have our house and as any home owner knows there are always things that need fixed on the house so we still have our projects that need to be fixed. I’m not trying to flip any more houses right now.”

INSIDE IZOD – Do you consider yourself a car guy?

ED CARPENTER – “Beyond racing, not really. I never really spent much time on passenger cars. I like races cars but beyond that I haven’t really gotten to be like Graham Rahal or Marco Andretti or Tomas Scheckter to where cars are a hobby.”

INSIDE IZOD – How many cars do you have?

ED CARPENTER – “I own three cars. I drive a Honda Element. My wife drives a Jeep Commander and I have an old pickup truck I use when I’m working on houses. They are all family cars. There are no luxury or exotic cars in our family.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is something about Ed Carpenter that would surprise your fans?

ED CARPENTER – “You can’t be too closed off in this business so there isn’t a whole lot people don’t know about me. We’re just a pretty tight knit family. We have our family and our group of friends. Other than that we are pretty much just normal people. I just happen to drive a race car for a living. I don’t do anything too exotic.”

INSIDE IZOD – Do you get noticed more in public?

ED CARPENTER – “The longer I do this around town I do in Indy especially in May because we are on the news every single night but for the most part it doesn’t affect our daily lives.”

INSIDE IZOD – Other than Indianapolis what are your favorite stops on the IZOD IndyCar Series schedule?

ED CARPENTER – “Obviously Kentucky because I’ve had so much success there. Iowa is a fun and challenging race track. I still wish we went to Phoenix and Michigan because those tracks were awesome. Baltimore was a really cool event because of how enthusiastic the fans and crowd were there. We had a lot of support and that always makes it fun. That was kinda what it was like to go to Japan. The fans were really into it there.”

INSIDE IZOD – Favorite foods?

ED CARPENTER – “Mexican food is a favorite. In the summer time we cook out burgers and things like that. But when I’m not worried about eating it will be Mexican for sure.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is your workout schedule these days?

ED CARPENTER – “I workout at St. Vincent’s Sports Performance. In the season I’m in there three to four days a week depending on what the travel schedule is like and when I’m at home I try to get in there every day. I’m there for about an hour-and-a-half. I’m not trying to be a Triathlete like these other guys.”

INSIDE IZOD – Best prank you’ve ever pulled?

ED CARPENTER – “It seems like everyone in racing within the team has done pranks at some level. When I was younger I used to do more than I do now because I don’t want to wait for the other shoe to drop. I’ve had more pulled on me than I’ve had done. One of the most memorable ones was at Vision when they took my shoes and tied them up in the rafters at the top of the shop when we were getting ready to leave for a race. I never got to the bottom of who did that one.”

INSIDE IZOD – What about your musical preference?

ED CARPENTER – “Mostly Country these days. Whatever is on the radio. I don’t really listen to the iPod that much, just what is on in the car.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is the last thing you loaded on your iPod?

ED CARPENTER – “I honestly don’t know the last time I’ve downloaded a song. If I do anything it’s Pandora Radio on my cell phone.”

BY BRUCE MARTIN

MOORESVILLE, North Carolina – Scott Dixon’s victory in the Indy Japan: The Final at Twin Ring Motegi capped an incredible week for the two-time IZOD IndyCar Series champion and 2008 Indianapolis 500 winner. His wife, Emma, gave birth to their second daughter, Tilly, on September 10 before Dixon departed for Japan. Tilly joins older daughter Poppy in the Dixon Family.

“I told Chip Ganassi (Dixon’s team owner) having another mouth to feed I have to win more races and more prize money so that I can afford them,” Dixon said. “I don’t think you can ever top that week having a new baby in the family, winning the pole at the next race and then winning the race at Japan the first time on the road course. It was a picture perfect race. It was very cool. The overseas races to me are a little more special with the exception of the Indianapolis 500. With the year Japan has had to go over there and still have the race – being the only driver to get the pole on both oval and road course and win on both is very special. You couldn’t have scripted it any better.”

Young Tilly was born six weeks early so the infant is currently in Pre-Natal Care where Dixon said she will remain for another week or two.

“Her lungs aren’t really built for any speed at this point,” he said. “She is on respirators and stuff and is being fed by tubes. But she is doing good. As long as they are healthy that is all I really care about. The girls are cool that they are `Daddy’s Little Girl.’ They are very clingy with the dad’s. I asked the doctors now that the second one is a girl what are the percentages that the third one will be another girl and they said 75-80 percent.”

SCOTT DIXON CELEBRATES AFTER WINNING THE HONDA INDY 200 AT MID-OHIO.

After winning the pole and leading all but one of the 63 laps in last Sunday’s race, Dixon proved to be just as fast getting from Motegi to Tokyo Narita Airport.

“I left straight after the race, jumped on a helicopter and caught the 6:15 p.m. race out of Tokyo Sunday night and then I was home back in Indianapolis at 6 p.m. Sunday night,” Dixon said. “That was quite bizarre.”

With two races left in the 2011 season Dixon is third in the standings, 59 points behind Team Penske’s Will Power. Franchitti is second in the standings, 11 points back. Although Dixon remains alive in the championship race, he realizes both drivers would have to falter over the final two races of the season.

He also can’t help but think about how a slow start to the season hampered his chance at being closer to the championship.

“That’s the frustrating part that we start the season slow and that keeps us from contending for the championship,” Dixon lamented. “Years previous in 2007 if we didn’t run out of fuel on the last lap we could have won another championship. In 2009 we could have won another championship but Ryan Briscoe and I are on the wrong fuel strategy and Dario Franchitti saves fuel we could have probably won that one as well. It is frustrating that we could be possibly looking at our fifth championship but that is racing, isn’t it? We have to take the good days with the bad.

“I’m surprised we are as close as we are because we were crashed out of a few races at the beginning. It could have been looking a lot different but it happens.”

Dixon also has a chance to win the A.J. Foyt Trophy that goes to the best oval driver in the series. With the final two races of the season on the ovals at Kentucky Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway he has a 17 point lead over Target/Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Dario Franchitti.

“It would be cool,” Dixon said. “It would be a huge salvage after the year we’ve had. We haven’t really had a strong year so far on the ovals. Indy was the biggest disappointment. We have struggled in some places but mile-and-a-halves are good. Kentucky has always been good for us. Las Vegas is a bit of an unknown. At this point we want to really finish the season on a strong note and maybe salvage the oval championship. That would be pretty cool.”

So, let’s spend a few moments “Catching up with Scott Dixon.”

INSIDE IZOD – What do you like about IZOD fashion?

SCOTT DIXON – “I think for me it’s a casual part of it. They go from casual to dressing smart but what I like is the sporting factor. It’s outdoorsy and good for a lot of occasions. The stuff looks cool, too. But with a new baby we need some IZOD diapers.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is the most fun aspect of being involved with IZOD?

SCOTT DIXON – “I think it’s some of the edginess they bring. It brings a great style to the series which in the past has been lacking. It brings a big name to the sport. They promote the series and it’s a fun group to be a part of. It’s got a cool factor to it.”

INSIDE IZOD – For an international race how do you deal with the time difference?

SCOTT DIXON – “I will say Japan is the worst for that. New Zealand is only a total of four or five hours difference although it is a whole day ahead. But Japan is 13 hours and that is really difficult on the body. I try to get up in the morning whatever time that is on the destination and then really string out the first day and go to bed about 11 p.m. or midnight. Then it is normally not too bad. But Japan is very difficult.”

INSIDE IZOD – What are some of the things you like to do away from the track?

SCOTT DIXON – “I like to do outdoorsy stuff. I haven’t done the triathlons as vigorous as I would have liked but I still do some of the training. I still like to cycle and run. I fly a little bit – not as much as I would like to. I also like wakeboarding. I like to do anything outdoors.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is your workout schedule these days?

SCOTT DIXON – “The basic schedule is still pretty much six days a week, 1-1/2 hours a day. It’s a lot of circuit training, Plyometrics (a type of exercise training designed to produce fast, powerful movements, and improve the functions of the nervous system, generally for the purpose of improving performance in sports), a lot of reaction stuff and endurance like running and cycling. I work out six days a week and two or three of those days is twice a day. I always take the day off before a race week. If it’s a tough road course I’ll take the Monday off afterwards but if it’s after an oval and we get back at a decent time I’ll work out on a Monday.”

INSIDE IZOD –What is something about Scott Dixon that would surprise your fans?

SCOTT DIXON – “I’m a bit of a gadget geek. I love Apple products. I have a ton of Apple products. I have the iPhone, the iPad, a few MacBook Pros, the big iMac. I love to fly the occasional helicopter simulators and I love hanging out with my family.”

INSIDE IZOD – Are you someone that as soon as something new comes out you have to have it?

SCOTT DIXON – “I have to have it like yesterday. I’m anticipating the iPhone 5. It’s coming out in a few weeks.”

INSIDE IZOD – Are you one of the most well-versed and well-traveled drivers in the series? You are from New Zealand and your wife, Emma, is from London and you both travel a great deal.

SCOTT DIXON – “Yes, we travel throughout the year. I do five or six trips to England each year and one or two to New Zealand. My wife travels a lot, too.”

INSIDE IZOD – How did you meet Emma?

SCOTT DIXON – “It was during my WilliamsF1 test in 2005. I was over there for a meeting in London for two days and we had a mutual friend and asked if there was anyone in town that I could go out to dinner with and show me around town. She was with a group of friends that I went out with while I was there. I was in London for business and that’s how we met.”

INSIDE IZOD – Both of you seems to share a great bond together

SCOTT DIXON – “Absolutely. We met at the perfect time in our lives. I had been a bachelor for many years and she lived in London for a while and we had both seen most of the world at that point and we clicked. It was the best time for us. I can’t imagine being with anyone else.”

INSIDE IZOD – Do you consider yourself a car guy?

SCOTT DIXON – “I love race cars. I’m starting to enjoy the older, vintage cars but I’m nowhere near on the level like Dario Franchitti. I have my one car – an Acura MDX. That’s the only car I have. Emma has her Audi. I think later down the road I might acquire more cars. I’ve had nice cars like the Audi when it first came out but I only kept them for a month or two. I think road cars are to get you from Point A to Point B. I also have my Pace Car from my 2008 victory at the Indianapolis 500.”

INSIDE IZOD – With two daughters what are you going to say if they tell you, “Daddy, I want to be a race driver?”

SCOTT DIXON – “I don’t know. I won’t push them into racing. If I had a boy it might be a little bit different with racing. I would rather see them do more sport sports. I love sports myself. I would love to hand them a tennis racket, a golf club, a pair of running shoes. I want to be there for the decision they make and not pressure them. Racing was the family thing when I was growing up. I wasn’t pressured. I had to ask a lot but my dad loved racing. I’m not going to push them into anything. I would love for them to be tennis players and golfers.”

INSIDE IZOD – What teams in the United States do you watch?

SCOTT DIXON – “Living in Indianapolis I love the Colts. I’ve done some charity stuff with Peyton Manning, which has been fun. I’m watching some Rugby World Cup in New Zealand right now. The Colts are the team. I watched the Indiana Pacers when I first came here but they pretty much suck right now.”

INSIDE IZOD – Away from the track what is a perfect day for you?

SCOTT DIXON – “On an off weekend it would be getting up early and watching Formula One wherever they are racing. Then a walk with my wife, daughter and the dogs somewhere, then chill out, have a couple beers, have some lunch and take a nap in the afternoon.”

INSIDE IZOD – Who do you follow the most in Formula One?

SCOTT DIXON – “A range of guys. I like McLaren as a whole with Fernando Alonso. But I also follow Sebastian Vettel at Red Bull because his engineer was mine when I started at Pac-West.”

INSIDE IZOD – Favorite foods?

SCOTT DIXON – “I love sushi; I love a good Indian like curry. My worst favorite is Taco Bell. I get a Gordita Crunch and then I sub the beef and get beans in it so it’s a Cheesy Gordita Crunch with beans.”

INSIDE IZOD – Best prank you’ve ever pulled?

SCOTT DIXON – “One year at Indy it was quite funny when Darren Manning was my teammate. The golf cart has two cylinders and we took one of the spark plugs out so he was running around on one cylinder all month very slowly getting his way around for the whole month. That was pretty funny. I have some rude ones but I can’t make those public.”

INSIDE IZOD – What about your musical preference?

SCOTT DIXON – “Mostly the hits. The stuff I listened to the most is actually Radio One which is a show in London but Sirius just took it off the air. It’s mostly Alternative and Eighties Music.”

INSIDE IZOD – What is the last thing you loaded on your iPod?

SCOTT DIXON – “A new band called the `Naked and Famous.’ I also loaded Mumford and Sons.
